Orthopaedic Surgeon and President of the Queensland Medical Women’s Society
Dr Sarah Coll MBBS FRACS (Ortho) FAOA CIME GAICD has been an Orthopaedic Surgeon for the past 14 years and was the second woman in Queensland to become a Fellow of Orthopaedic Surgery. She was the first surgeon in Cairns to sub-specialise in arthroscopy and upper limb surgery. Currently 96% of all Orthopaedic Surgeons are male, and unfortunately there is an unconscious bias against women which is quite challenging to address both personally and professionally. Sarah has learnt how to support herself and her peers through these challenges; with a particular interest in self-care of doctors, and by extension, patients.
With her interests in governance, accountability and proper representation Dr Sarah Coll has become a leader among her peers and is currently the President of the Queensland Medical Women’s Society; a Board Member and Councillor for the Australian Medical Association of Queensland; a Fellowship-elected College Councillor for the Royal Australasian College of Surgeons; and President of the Far North Medical and Legal Society. Through these advocacy roles Sarah plans to have a positive impact on policy and attitudes, while representing those working in regional and rural settings.
